Not all vanilla is created equal.
While a lot of other vanilla shakes claim to use "natural vanilla," their dirty little secret is that most so-called
"natural vanilla" flavors actually use harsh chemical additives—which make them not natural at all. But NOT
our vanilla! Instead, we do it the right way. The old-fashioned way. The way the indigenous Malagasy farmers
have been cultivating vanilla beans for generations. And this way is the only way that's good enough for Shakeology's high standards.

Where does Shakeology's prized vanilla come from?
The vanilla beans used in Vanilla Shakeology come from deep inside the lush jungles of Madagascar, a remote
island perched off the eastern edge of South Africa. Under this tropical rainforest's vast canvas, we discovered a
band of rural Malagasy farmers who were growing vanilla beans that actually met our benchmark. Not only do these
farmers harvest their crops the way nature intended, the natural resources available for growing the beans are
absolutely perfect. The soil is rich, the air is pure, and the water is untainted—which makes for the world's most
flavorful vanilla.

How does a vanilla bean become vanilla?
Through a lengthy and complex process, local Malagasy farmers painstakingly pollinate each and every vanilla
orchid by hand—then hand-harvest, blanch, sweat, sun-dry, and condition the beans (over a 6-month period!) to
release their incredible essence and aromas.

Although farming is a mainstay of Madagascar's economy, it is largely underdeveloped there. The current vanilla
supply chain in this impoverished nation lacks standards and quality control. And sadly, once the cured vanilla
beans leave Madagascar for flavor extraction elsewhere, far too many companies are taking less-than-ethical
shortcuts to bring their "vanilla-like" products to market. Many vanillas out there use chemicals and "vanilla-like"
fillers, which substantially cheapen the product, yet they're passing it off to the consumer as the "real" thing.

How do we know that Shakeology's vanilla is pure?
It's simple. We have partnered with a vanilla source that certifies complete traceability of our vanilla—from bean
to bag. And through our purchase of these particular beans, we're helping to invest in a wide variety of training for
the rural vanilla farmers. They are learning optimal and sustainable growing and harvesting practices, which
require less labor. This training enables them to increase yields, standardize their processes, and build a better
infrastructure. It's really a win-win proposition for everyone involved.

Helping the environment and
future generations.
Another goal of these farmer training programs is to end the "slash-and-burn"agricultural harvesting that's causing deforestation, soil erosion, and putting unique crops (like vanilla) and natural resources at risk. Through our
purchase of these beans, we are helping to invest in the building and ongoing maintenance of new schools in Madagascar. The schools are built with renewable resources and are currently enhancing the education of more than 3,000 children.

Customizing your shake to your personal taste.
One of the best things about our new Vanilla Shakeology (besides being loaded with over 70 super-healthy ingredients from around the world) is that you can customize recipes to make it taste like anything you want. You can have a PB & J one day, a Vanilla Latte the next, or a Tiramisu for "dessert." Then again, you can't go wrong with just vanilla.
